OLD HIGH MUSIC The next lunchtime event will be an organ recital, Saturday 12 August, 12 noon. We welcome back Mark Spalding from Angus, who performed for us in 2015. OLD HIGH CHURCH OPENING The Old High will be open for visitors to the end of September on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday each week from 10am-12 noon and 2-4 pm. If you can’t help every week we will still need people to help out on an occasional basis to cover in case of illness and holidays and will keep a list of those who can help in this way. BLYTHSWOOD’S GONE BANANAS IN SERBIA Blythswood Care is renewing its appeal to provide essential food aid to migrants, escaping the Middle East conflicts and now stranded in Serbia. The organisation provides vegetable soup, bread and bananas, with the last item having almost symbolic significance as an example of high-energy food that is culturally acceptable to people from every religious tradition. Blythswood has been helping to feed people escaping from Syria and other conflict zones for nearly two years. Donate to this appeal at www.blythswood.org/bananas or by texting SYRI17 £5 to 70070. £5 will provide over five kilos (more than 40 bananas) for people in the migrant centre. OLD HIGH AUGUST LUNCHTIME RECITAL The recital planned for Saturday 13th August has unfortunately had to be cancelled, but will be re-scheduled in 2017. The next event will therefore be on Saturday 10th September when Musick Fyne will be returning to give a choral recital including some fascinating Early Music. EXPLORING FAITH Would you like to explore the Christian Faith? Perhaps you have a friend who would like to be introduced to Christianity? Maybe you’d like to explore your own faith further. Peter is planning a series of meetings in the New Year, based on a new Church of Scotland resource Learn: Exploring Faith, an engaging guide to the Christian faith for the 21st century. It’s suitable for anyone who would like to become an adult member of the church, but also for existing church members who like to explore. Please contact Peter PNimmo<at>churchofscotland.org.
COMMUNION FOR HOUSEBOUND There will be a short Communion service THIS SATURDAY 30 January at 2.30pm at St Stephen’s. Transport can be arranged to allow those who often are unable to come to the regular Communion services to attend- and everyone else is welcome. OLD HIGH MUSIC the inaugural recital will be on Saturday 20 February at 12 noon when there will be the chance to hear a gifted young pianist, Hyuk Namkoong, play Sonatas by Bach, Beethoven and Kapustin. Hyuk is currently studying for a Masters degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. He has won various music awards, including, most recently the New Piano Stars Competition.This promises to be a wonderful hour of music. The monthly programme of lunchtime recitals will continue this year on Saturdays at the Old High, comprising choral concerts, organ and instrumental recitals. Full details available shortly. We are looking for as many as possible to get involved; craft people, servers, cooks, home bakers, singers, actors, people to set up and clean up! VOLUNTEERING VOCATIONS, a gap year scheme for young adults aged 18–25, is currently being piloted in two locations in Scotland, and we are hoping to continue the programme with a new group of volunteers in 2016–17. The programme offers a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain experience of the different types of work within a parish or project in a supported environment, whilst exploring any potential call to serve the Church in the long term. GOOD NEWS FROM ARMY CHAPLAIN REVJOHN DUNCAN who sent the following email: “Thank you for your good wishes. The good folk of Leuchars voted for me! I am now the Minister elect at Leuchars, Fife. The Presbytery of St Andrews will decide the date of the Induction Service. However, I plan to move to Leuchars at the beginning of March 2016.” We wish John all the best as he comes to the end of his Army career and moves back into Parish ministry in a town which is about to become an Army barracks town!

HIGHLANDS SUPPORT REFUGEES urgently needs winter/waterproof clothing for Babies/Children/Women/Men: Underwear (new) Sturdy shoes (all sizes) Tents, Torches, Tealights, Tarpaulins, Sleeping bags/Blankets, Babies Bottles/Blankets. We have space to fill in a lorry heading to Serbia at the end of November, and are in the process of organising a container to Greece in the next few weeks. REFUGEE WELCOME VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Highland Third Sector Interface are looking for volunteers who are interested in supporting the incoming Refugee families. A volunteer Greeter will provide a local, personalised series of one-to-one sessions with a resettled refugee family or individual, to support their integration and access to community services and supports. The long term aim is to provide a more robust integration for refugees coming into Highland. Volunteers require to be available for training on the 26 and 27 February, and for a minimum of two hours on a weekly basis for 8 weeks, over a 2-month period around March/April 2016. The Rev Doug McRoberts, who is preaching on 19 April, recently retired as Minister of the Church of Scotland congregation in Malta. He will be speaking about his congregations work with the refugees who risk their lives to sail to Europe from African and further afield. This is supported by the Church of Scotland Guild’s project, Out of Africa into Malta, which you can read about here.
