Hi Kevin. I think I would say that your first paragraph is my reading of the current situation. I wouldn’t say that allowing an opt-out for when an entire Kirk Session has prayerfully come to a decision that they disagree with a position is the same as turning a blind eye. I think it’s graciously allowing different interpretation and consequently, application.

Thanks Peter. Good to read your perspective. I was disappointed as were many Onekirkers that 2a went down especially to a motion that I thought initially was potentially a hasty ‘fudge’. I remain a wee bit edgy but also agree it does offer a potential solution which does have historical precence in church government and formation. So, all prayers for God speed ahead.

A helpful summary thanks! My only personal bugbear (not with this post specifically) is with the label “liberal”. It has often happened elsewhere that the term “traditionalist” gets substituted inaccurately for “evangelical” or worse still, “biblical”. When “revisionist” becomes substituted for “liberal” it can lead some to think that only those who are liberal in their theology (as opposed to evangelical) are revisionists, whereas there were many evangelical revisionists also. I read the above summary as being “more liberal attitude towards sexuality” rather than “non-evangelical” but felt it was worth mentioning. It’s not a critique of this post, which i appreciated, thank you.

A mixed economy is where you say that there are different views about something but that these different views can still be held with integrity.

I don’t think it is a mixed economy where you say that there is one doctrinal view that is right but that the church will turn a blind eye to those who disagree. That’s not a mixed economy, it is a mess.
